Valaikappu aka Bangle Ceremony

On the 20th of April 2014, My parents organized my "Valaikaapu Ceremony" which literally means "Bangle Ceremony" which is the hindu version of "Baby Shower". I don't have much knowledge about this ceremony..but here's little of what I know :

Valaikaapu is a ceremony held during the 7th or 9th month of pregnancy to bless her pregnancy and ensure a safe delivery. Elder women would put glass bangles on the mother-to-be's hands & apply turmeric paste on her face. The bangles should be worn till delivery. There's a belief that the sound of the glass bangles would keep the baby calm. This ceremony is normally done only for the 1st pregnancy.

So mine was held on a Sunday morning at my parent's residence, I had to wear my wedding saree. The whole ceremony was practically like my pre wedding nallugu only difference was I had my husband by my side haha. The ceremony went on well until the made me stand and bend forward balancing both my hands on coconut while the poured milk on my spine, apparently it's suppose to show if you would have a normal delivery or a cesarean!! " I HAVE NO IDEA HOW THAT WORKS".
